" You say in your Guide to Investing that "Provenance Rules". Please give an example."

This highly important satinwood, ebony and mahogany Cabinet can be traced to the 26th of July 1876 when John Dace collected and signed for the numbered locks which were made by Messrs Chubb & Son. Made in the manner and quality of Jackson & Graham and to a design attributable to Bruce James Talbert it is inset with Japanese Komai panels inlaid and applied with silver and gold. Each of these is narrative or allegorical and the cabinet comes with a key to their meaning.
In the spring or early summer of 1876 Jackson and Graham held an exhibition of Japanese works of art, at which time Komai panels such as those on this cabinet were of extremely high value. There is no doubt that the cabinet was specially commissioned by a wealthy enthusiast to display the panels just as the Kimbolton Cabinet was made for the Duke of Manchester to show of his Capelli panels one hundred years earlier.
In its way this piece is as historically important as its forerunner.
The companies of Collinson & Lock and Jackson & Graham are well documented as is the work of Bruce James Talbert, and full biographies can be supplied. John Dace was a member of the Working Men’s Association of Brass Padlock Makers and was apparently of some standing as his name appears frequently in the Chubb archives. The cabinet hinges are by the London makers Messrs. Cope and Collinson.
