An extremely fine quality Pair of late Regency period Old Sheffield Plate Decanter Stands or Bottle Coasters. The deeply everting sides vertically lobed within stamped, filled and applied silver borders in the Rococo Revival manner with shells, scrolls and spiral lobing. The central silver boss to the turned wood base engraved with a dexter hand holding a book, the crest of Millar “Felicem Reddit Religio.”

Maker and Provenance
Created in London 1742 by Thomas England, a respected silversmith of the Georgian period. The piece is engraved on the underside with contemporary initials: H over WM, providing fascinating insight into its original ownership and social context.

A facet cut and ruby glass Victorian period glass refresher or cooler of large size and rare colour with two horizontal bands dividing the facets over a star cut base.
Usually smaller they are sometimes referred to as finger bowls and were popular table setting accoutrements from the late 18th century.

The everted lip with an ogee moulded edge around a rich patinated surface. The 67 x 68 cm measurement a guarantee of 18th century origin due to natural shrinkage of the timber since being turned.
In immaculate condition, this is the largest tray we have ever seen.
The earliest records refer to trays as ‘Voyders’, used to clear dining rooms during the interval between the meal and the ensuing entertainments, a period known as the ‘Void’ which was also used to describe the pudding, taken informally with a gentle stroll.
When ‘New French’ replaced ‘Old French’ by 1600 the word for clearing the room was ‘Desert’ as was the pudding while adopting the Old English word ‘Trig’ for a wooden board.

The central silver boss to each turned wood base plain as original.
A presentation inscription in copperplate script on the front lower rim reads:- “From WS & CEB to Alfred Cheek Esq as some slight return for a long course of unwearied kindness & attention”
